It’s true that the Basic Conditions of Employment Act doesn’t apply to RMI members and that employers in the motor industry are not obliged to display the Act’s wall chart at their premises.
But as Aruna Ranchod, Industrial Relations Director at the RMI, explains, this is because employers and employees within the motor industry fall under the jurisdiction of the Motor Industry Bargaining Council (MIBCO). RMI members are instead bound by the terms and conditions specified in the Main Agreement for the Motor Industry (MAMI) – and must have a copy of the Agreement at their premises for the purpose of inspection by employees at the workplace.
The good news is that the parties to MIBCO undertook to simplify the Main Agreement, and have sent the simplified version to the Department of Labour for promulgation.
The RMI, which regularly helps members with points of the Agreement requiring interpretation, has taken things two steps further. It has added space-efficiency to the equation by making the simplified version submitted to the Department of Labour available on CD, and has boosted the convenience factor by including an interactive Table of Contents.
The Main Agreement CDs are available at R55,00 each (or R50,00 for orders of 50 or more), plus R20,00 per unit for postage. They can be posted or collected from the RMI’s offices in Randburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban or Bloemfontein.
