Engine Remanufacturer (ERA) and Diesel Fuel Injection (SADFIA) members in the Western Cape region had the privilege of attending a presentation by Adrian Velaers, Senior Technical Advisor – Retail and Commercial Fuels Market Technical Services at Sasol Energy. The presentation was part and parcel of the Regional Annual General Meetings and a tour of the Sasol Laboratory in Muizenberg, Cape Town.
In the technical presentation ‘Sulphur in Diesel – Effects and Myths’, Adrian dealt with: Sulphur specification history; How Sulphur is removed from diesel; The effect of sulphur on lubricity, injection systems and fuel pumps; The use of 2-stroke oil in diesel and The effect of sulphur on engine oil, exhaust systems, sensors and emissions.
During the tour of the Laboratory Adrian explained some of the work and showed members test cells. Work on diesel cleanliness testing with emphasis on high performance fuels for common rail diesel engines as well as the common rail injector fouling test were particularly impressive. Emissions testing and particulate measurement forms a large part of the work in the Laboratory – both for passenger and commercial vehicles.
In the emissions test cell a 15 litre Cummins engine with four (4) catalytic converters was showcased. Adrian also showed members an indestructible engine with a price tag of way over R 5 million.
Each member that attended received a Certificate of Achievement from Adrian titled ‘Diesel Fuel Automotive Testing & Diesel Sulphur Effects’.
The ERA and SADFIA members, then split up into separate rooms and dealt with the business of the respective Association Annual General Meetings. Members elected Regional Executive Committees for the ensuing term (2015 – 2017). The elected ERA Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson for Western Cape are Johan Du Toit (Automotive Dynamix) and Karl Schmitt (Northern Motor Engineering). The elected SADFIA Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson for the Western Cape are Dirk Du Plessis (Dup Diesel) and Werner Briegel (KH Briegel).
The momentum and work that gets done for both ERA and SADFIA members were recognized and summarized by a comment from staunch, well-respected and long-serving member, Roy Bastick: “Never in 14 years did we have an attendance like this”. Coming from Roy, this greatly appreciated by both Pieter Niemand, National ERA Director, and Louis van Huyssteen, National SADFIA Director.”
