The Revised Generic National Artisan Workplace Data, Learner Grant Funding and Administrative System Policy was approved by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, DR BE Nzimande, on 22 June 2015.
Amongst other matters, the policy standardises artisan funding in the country through the creation of a single artisan funding mechanism. Furthermore, it requires the annual review of the grant amount based on the Producer Price Index.
The artisan learner grant amount for the period starting 1 April 2020 will remain at R165,000 per new artisan learner enrolled due to the current economic challenges and the effect that an increase would have on the number of apprenticeship opportunities. The grant amount will remain R165,000 until further notice is given of a change to the grant amount.
It is trusted that this will assist employers to indenture more artisan learners and that Sector Education and Training Authorities and the National Skills Fund will work closely with the Department to fully meet the requirements of this policy.
